This policy explains how Parker Neil (“we” or “us”) collects, uses, discloses and protects personal information in connection with this website and with inquiries made through it, by email or by telephone. We handle personal information in keeping with Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and, where it applies, Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
This policy is about website visitors and people who contact us. Information about clients is also protected by solicitor–client privilege and by the confidentiality duties in the Law Society of Alberta’s Code of Conduct, which are stricter than the rules described here.
Who is responsible
Parker Neil is responsible for the personal information under our control. [Add the legal name of the law corporation here, if the practice is carried on through one] Our privacy contact is Parker Neil, Lawyer, at [email protected] or (403) 993 9529. Please contact them with any question, access or correction request, or concern about privacy.
What we collect
- Information you send us. Your name, email address, telephone number, and your message. Please do not include case details.
- Technical information. Like most websites, the servers that host this site automatically record your IP address, browser and device type, the pages requested, and the date and time of your visit. We use this only to keep the site running and secure.
- Spam-prevention data. The contact form uses a hidden field, a timer and a “not a robot” box. To limit abuse, it also keeps a short-lived counter linked to a scrambled (hashed) version of your IP address for up to one hour.
- Cookies. This website does not use advertising, tracking or analytics cookies. Standard WordPress security cookies are used only for site administrators who are logged in.
Why we collect it
- to respond to your inquiry and decide whether we can assist you, including checking for conflicts of interest;
- to operate, secure and maintain this website;
- to meet our legal and professional obligations.
We do not sell personal information, use it for advertising, or add you to a mailing list.
Your consent
By sending us a message or contacting us directly, you consent to our collecting, using and disclosing your information for the purposes above. You may withdraw your consent at any time by contacting our privacy contact, subject to legal or contractual restrictions and reasonable notice. Withdrawing consent may limit our ability to respond to you.
Confidentiality of inquiries
We treat what you tell us when you ask about our services with care, in keeping with our professional obligations to prospective clients. However, sending a message does not create a lawyer–client relationship, and email and web forms are not fully secure. Please do not send case details, passwords or sensitive documents until we have confirmed that we can act for you and agreed on a secure way to share them.
When we share information
We share personal information only:
- with service providers who help us operate this website and our email, and who may use it only for those services;
- with your consent;
- where required or permitted by law, for example under a court order, or to protect someone’s safety;
- as needed to meet our professional regulatory obligations.
Service providers outside Canada
Some of our service providers may store or process information outside Canada:
- Website hosting: [hosting provider name], located in [country].
- Email: [email provider name], located in [country].
- Logo font: to display the logo, this website loads a font file from Google Fonts, operated by Google LLC in the United States. When your browser requests it, Google receives your IP address and browser details.
Information held outside Canada may be subject to the laws of that country, including access by its courts and authorities. For questions about our use of service providers outside Canada, contact Parker Neil, Lawyer, our privacy contact, at [email protected].
How long we keep it
We keep inquiries from people who do not become clients for [24 months], and then securely delete them. If you become a client, your information is kept in your client file for the period required by law and by the Law Society of Alberta’s rules. Server logs are kept by our hosting provider for [30 days].
How we protect it
We use safeguards that are reasonable for the sensitivity of the information, including encrypted (HTTPS) connections, access limited to people who need it, and protections against spam and abuse. No system is completely secure. If a privacy incident involving your information creates a real risk of significant harm, we will report it to the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta and notify you as the law requires.
Access and correction
You may ask for access to the personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it, by writing to our privacy contact. We may need to confirm your identity first. We will respond within the time the law requires (generally 45 days) and will explain if we cannot provide something, for example because of privilege or other legal restrictions.
Questions and complaints
Please contact our privacy contact first so that we can try to resolve your concern. If you are not satisfied, you may contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (Edmonton 780-422-6860; toll-free 1-888-878-4044). Where PIPEDA applies, you may also contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Children
This website is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information through it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it was last changed.
